| I can't say for sure what will happen. One night you might be eating from a New York hot dog stand, only to find yourself the next evening recording a number one album in front of the "Big Wigs." Each week of high school camp is designed to be an exciting and growing experience. A variety of speakers will lead encouraging and challenging teaching times. Our counselors are prepared to show you a part of the world you may have never seen, and lead you in discussion about things you may have never considered. How is the program geared toward the age group? I know you've had a long school year. And I know you need a break! This week is about you, and about engaging you on your level. I know you have questions, and Calvin Crest doesn't want to pretend that this world is an easy place to be all the time. We want this week to be a breather from the rest of your life, but we also want to challenge you to examine the way you live it. Don't worry about being bored. We've got plenty in store for you. Who is the Staff? The Coordinator and the Activities Director: they're in charge. But aside from having authority, they have set out to create a great schedule of events for you. The First Aider is here when your activity gets a little over-active (and in case you have medications). Our Audio Visual friends will make sure you can hear and see everything you need to, and remember it all after you leave. The Craft Technician exists for all your creative needs (I'm talking more than lanyards). The Lead Counselors are prepared to wear ridiculous clothes, lead great discussions, and make sure your week is all that it should be. Who are the Counselors? The volunteer counselors are perhaps the most important position we have. They give up a week of their summer to spend all their time with the campers. Throughout each day they build relationships with the kids as they lead morning devotions, go on all the hikes, and play all the exciting games. Our program could not happen without the volunteer counselors. In most cases, counselors are parents or volunteers who have come up with a church. But in some cases, Calvin Crest relies on outside volunteers to fill these positions for the week. What happens on a typical day? After breakfast we'll have a little bit of music to start our day. With your "team" you might head out with your Lead Counselor to see one of the biggest trees in the world, or go stop by the pool for a swim and a chat. Later on, after you've spent some time with your cabin group checking in on some good words and eaten some lunch, there could be a time available to meet some new people while learning some practical ways to live out your faith. But if that's not taking place, it's because you need to be back at the pool choreographing a water opera with the rest of your group! (I've seen this done. It's amazing). In the afternoon you'll have plenty of free time to slide down the ninety-foot water-slide, grab some ice cream before you climb the rock wall, or just hang out with some friends while you watch the others play Ultimate Frisbee. Don't be surprised if dinner suddenly turns into a Mexican Fiesta (I warned you). And remember that record deal I mentioned earlier? That happens now. And once you've got that taken care of, it's time to head up to the Amphitheater for some musical worship, and a time to listen to some great, wise people talk to us about living the life God desires us to live. What is the purpose/mission of High School Camp? At Calvin Crest we love to see people come to know Jesus. But we believe that coming to know Jesus is more than saying a prayer, and reading some scripture. High School camp is not only about having an exciting week, but also learning what it really means to know Jesus, and live life in that knowledge. |
